NutQuacker Farms sells two types of products - Colossal Chestnuts and Chestnut Honey.
Colossal Chestnuts
NutQuacker Farms only grows one type of chestnut - the Colossal Chestnut. The Colossal Chestnut is thought to be a hybrid of Asian and European chestnuts. The chestnuts mature and fall to the ground at the end of September. In the past, the chestnuts had been harvested by hand. In 2005, the chestnuts will be harvested by a harvester. When annual production reached 4,000 pounds in 2004, it became difficult to harvest, clean, store and package the crop by hand. A pound of chestnuts sell for $5.00.
Chestnut Honey
NutQuacker Farms brought in some bees to pollinate the chestnut blossoms in the summer. The bees were very busy and produced seven queens resulting in seven swarms. In 2004, NutQuacker Farms produced 85 gallons of chestnut honey. The owner's of NutQuacker Farms, Mark and Kim Beam, contract a local beekeeper to collect the chestnut honey and deliver it, where the honey is simply jarred and labeled. The finished result is a beautiful medium honey color with a unique, distinct taste. Visitors to NutQuacker Farms are treated to a sample, with the honey being very popular with international guests. The chestnut honey sells for $10 per 12 oz jar.
